High Holy Days Food Drive
September 27-October 9
Hunger is a growing problem everywhere, including right here in New York City. There are shortages at food pantries. We can help.
Each year, we run a special food drive that begins
on Yom Kippur, when congregants receive an empty
shopping bag as they leave services. We ask that they fill the bag with canned goods and other non-perishable food items, spending what would have been spent on food that day, and return their filled bags by Simchat Torah on Tuesday, October 9. Donations go to the
Yorkville Common Pantry.
Inside each bag we place an envelope for “The Corners
of Our Fields” campaign sponsored by Mazon. This national nonprofit agency allocates funds to prevent and
alleviate hunger among people of all faiths and
backgrounds.
On
Yom Kippur
we read that we are commanded to “set
aside the corners of our fields for the poor and
the stranger.” What better time to share our good fortune and express our thankfulness for all we have than at
the start of the New Year?
