Tisha b'Av

10 Av 5772 / July 29, 2012*

All are invited to our Erev Tisha b'Av Study & Service -
Saturday, July 28 at 7:00 pm

Tisha b'Av, which means the "Ninth of Av", refers to a traditional day of mourning the destruction of both ancient Temples in Jerusalem. In contrast to Orthodoxy, Reform Judaism has never assigned a central religious role to the ancient Temple. Therefore, mourning the destruction of the Temple in such an elaborate fashion did not seem meaningful. More recently, in Reform Judaism Tisha b'Av has been transformed into a day to remember many Jewish tragedies that have occurred throughout history. Learn more about Tisha b'Av.

*This year, Tisha b'Av is observed on the 10th of Av, Sunday, July 29. When the 9th of Av falls on Shabbat, observance of Tisha b'Av takes place on Sunday; no outward signs of mourning intrude upon the normal Sabbath.
