Rowland : Senior Cantor Cantor Judith Kahan Rowland joined the clergy team at Temple Shaaray Tefila in July 2008. She was invested as Cantor in 1981 from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, School of Sacred Music. In 2006 she was awarded an honorary Doctorate from the same seminary.
Cantor Rowland served as Cantor at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation from 1996 to 2008. She served the congregation in many capacities, including administration of the Bnai Mitzvah program, conducting and directing adult and youth choirs, and teaching. Cantor Rowland is the Immediate Past President of the American Conference of Cantors. A product of the Reform movement and its camps, she has served on the Union for Reform Judaism Commission on Religious Living, the Joint Cantorial Placement Commission and the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music Advisory Council. She has concertized extensively throughout the United States, is also known for her work with youth choirs, and is featured on a CD of children’s repertoire. Cantor Rowland and her husband, Michael Rowland, have two children, Rachel and Benjamin.
