Spring Mitzvah Day Highlights - Sunday, May 6, 2012

More than 300 congregants participated in 17 mitzvah projects (including one on May 4) around Manhattan and at the Temple, with volunteers of all ages working together to feed the hungry;* visit the young, the elderly and the ill; make gifts for Shaaray Tefila's Kesher bags and fleece blankets for sick infants and one-of-a-kind knit blankets for teens in residential treatment centers; plant a garden for low-income seniors; and work in a neighborhood park. (*Volunteers not only served lunch to seniors and helped prepare and serve lunch at a downtown soup kitchen, but also baked 1300 cookies and made 1500 lbs. of sandwiches for City Harvest at the Temple.)

Sites and agencies included: The Educational Alliance, the Church of Saint Francis Xavier soup kitchen, Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, Kateri Senior Residence, Mount Sinai Hospital, John Jay Park, a Women In Need shelter, the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter Residence, Lott Senior Residence, Metropolitan Hospital Center, City Harvest, Project Linus, and the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services.
