SPRING MITZVAH DAY, SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2014
Spring Mitzvah Day took congregants all over Manhattan, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, on nine projects, while five kept volunteers busy at the temple. Volunteers helped prepare and serve meals to the homeless and the elderly; cleaned and planted in a neighborhood park; visited, played bingo and sang (with Cantor Dubinsky) with seniors; and did craft projects and shared pizza with kids living in shelters. Temple-based volunteers made sandwiches for City Harvest to distribute; baked (over 1900!) cookies for City Harvest lunchbags; made fleece blankets for sick infants; knit squares to make blankets for teens in treatment centers; and decorated and filled toiletry bags for hospitalized children and their families (and made cards for Save A Child's Heart Foundation in Israel).
At a TaSTY temple sleepover, more than twenty teens made sandwiches for New York Common Pantry, and the social action class worked at the pantry Sunday morning. Shaaray School of Rock's annual Spring Mitzvah Day appearance at the Lott Residence took place on May 18.
Many thanks for the efforts of all volunteers, staff, and the following project captains: Nancy Merberg, Renee Weisbaum, Sabrina Wolkoff, Amy-Louise Goldberg, Rob Stolz, Andrea Linne, Rachel Rosenblatt, Laura Wechsler, Jessica Baracco, Susan Birenbaum, Rich Birnbaum, Barbara Russek, Jill Hunter, Amira Gertz, Susan Stein, Matthew Haiken, Ethel Donner, Joanne Jahr, Rachel Justus, and Amit Pasman.
